Huron Post Office build in 1914

                            About the Huron Post Office

On July 13, 1880, John Cain became the first official Postmaster of Huron, SD.  Mr. Cain had not even applied for the job , but evidently others had asked Judge Bennett, the delegate to Congress, to hire Mr. Cain.

Mr. Cain had just ridden into Huron when a friend handed him his Postmaster petition, told him to get a fresh horse and continue on his way with the mail.  John told his friend that his horse had gone as far as he had so they  would just continue on their way, thank you very much!   After seeing who had signed the petition, Mr. Cain wasn't about to turn down the position.

So, the first building on the new town site of Huron, became the first Post Office.  Five years late, Sept. 14, 1886, Mr. Cain was given a day to move his post office to 345 Dakota S. where it remained until Jan. 1914.

People picked up their own mail at the post office until Aug. 31, 1887.  The next day some city delivery began.

Full free city delivery began 9-1-88.  A new building was built at 4th and Dakota between 1912-1914, and has remained there to this day.  In 1930's, an addition to the back helped with much needed space.
