Lesson Overview
 
Surface rocks in east river area of SD and the James River Valley tell the story of glaciations.  Students will learn about the results of glaciations and what geologists have found out. They will investigate in their own area and compare.

Standards Based Goal
Students will note the differences in the pre-ice age map of the Region and the present topography of the Region. They will draw maps, compare maps, draw rivers, learn their usual direction of flow, name and tell how they were formed.

Student Objectives
Students will note differences in the kinds of soil/land formations between East River and West River.  They will identify land type/formation where they live. Students will develop their own new-word/vocabulary list and make a wordsearch using the Puzzlemaker on the internet.

Prerequisite Skills
Some knowledge of computer, digital camera, scanner, maps and area they live in.
Site teacher should have discussed vocab. list before hand.  Practice using equipment and presenting.

1.  Play intro. music and show table page and then words to song.

2.  Role call by having students hold up completed Mammoth Maze page.

3.  Focus in and discuss large topography map. Ask, "Where are the mammoths today?"  Brainstorm.

4.  Give students time to draw a smaller version of the topography map and locate where they live.  Draw and label rivers existing before the last Ice Age. (Instruct facilitators to not mute mikes.)

5.  Check maps and compare. Question,  "Is this the way your area looks today?" "Why or why not?"

6.   List new words or names.  Assi. students to write or identify meanings before the next lesson and prepare questions to ask an employee of the U.S. Geo. Survey office.

Sign off with music in background. 

1.  Contact Frank Amundson of U.S. Geological Survey to set up a VTEL or Net Meeting for lesson 6.

2.  Check VTEL equipment and Net Meeting.

3. Copies of worksheets to be used as backup in case of tech. difficulties.

Invite Frank Amundson as a guest speaker for telecast three wks. from today. (5th lesson)
Students must have turned in questions and mailed them in so Mr. Amundson can answer them beforehand. 
Be sure both VTEL and NET Meeting are up and running.

Assessment:
After the telecast students will be expected to write the answers to their questions and send them in. 
They will be able to answer, "What is the Heartland?", on paper.
They will draw a topographical map, label where they live, identify rivers, show sites of interest.
Students will also practice singing, A Legend There.
Students will research and present a short report, next telecast, on what they learned about the area before last ice age.
